In this unit, student artists learn about Persian Miniatures. They then create an illustration of a story or poem using an engraving technique and oil pastels.
Death of Dobby”, from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
I made this piece because I love Harry Potter and I like this part even though it is so sad. One thing that I like is how the sea looks good as the main background and not like the sky. One challenge was trying to get the oil pastel into the shingles on the house, but it worked out in the end.
Scope & Sequence:
Lesson 1: In this lesson, students learn that they will be creating ‘engravings’, and prepare their materials for the upcoming project. Note: There is no video for this lesson.
Lesson 2: In this lesson, student artists learn about Persian Miniatures, then begin work on their own by choosing a narrative (or poem) and drawing an ‘action scene’ from it.
Lesson 3: In this lesson, student artists learn about how Persian artists would extensively pattern their paintings, then they begin adding patterns to their own engraving.
Lesson 4: In this lesson, students artists look at the bright colors Persian artists would use in their miniatures, and are able to use oil pastels to add color to their own work. They also continue to engrave patterns.
Lesson 5: Allow a fifth day entirely for finishing and refining work.
Lesson 6: Optional. a final day for finishing.
(you can preview the first lesson in a project without enrolling by clicking on ‘lesson 1’ above).
The above will take you to a supply list that assumes a class size of 30. Adjust according to your needs.
